Ram 3500 Goes Heavy Duty

When you want a truck that can handle the work loads you demand all while riding in comfort, you get the Ram 3500 from All Star Dodge Ram near North County. Today we want to share with you how the Ram 3500 is getting even more heavy duty.

The 2018 Ram 3500 Heavy Duty has 930 lb-ft of torque. Go ahead and let that sink in for a second.

Cummins has massaged its 6.7-liter I6 diesel to produce 30 lb-ft more than before and officially make it the class leader in torque (that’s 155 lb-ft per cylinder, by the way). For reference, the Ford F-Series Super Duty diesel makes 925 lb-ft, and GM’s Heavy Duty trucks get by with a measly 910 lb-ft.

While a 5 lb-ft lead over the competition isn’t necessarily something to shout from the rooftops about, Ram can now unequivocally say it offers more grunt than any other truck in its class. This extra power over last year’s engine comes from higher boost limits through a variable geometry turbo and an increase in fuel flow rates.

Another place where the Ram takes the cake is fifth-wheel towing, with a maximum of 30,000 pounds there. A new in-house hitch design gives the truck that capability. It’ll be yours for $1,395. Gooseneck and conventional hitch maximums aren’t industry leaders, but 31,210 and 20,000 pounds, respectively, is still way more than most need.

“Ram says the increased fifth-wheel towing capacity allows people to buy the 3500 instead of a Class 4 or 5 truck to haul the heaviest travel trailers out there. We don’t often have gargantuan-sized towing needs — and found the 900 lb-ft from before more than adequate — but 930 lb-ft of torque from a pickup truck is still a mind-boggling number.” -autoweek.com
